もしもMicrosoftが車を作ったら

 　

　最近の車はえらく電子装備が豊富で、コンピュータ的要素を強く意識させられます。一方でスタート・ストップボタンが車種ごとに違う場所にあるせいで、すぐには見つからなかったりします。何が便利で何が不便か、私が時代に取り残されているのかもしれません。

　車とコンピュータで言えば、最近はファーウェイが自動車を作ったり鴻海が参入したりして話題になっています。一方で、大昔、Microsoftの創業者で知られているビル・ゲイツ氏は、自動車業界を揶揄してこう言い放ったことが知られています。

"If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

「もしもGMがコンピュータ産業が持っているような技術に追いついていたら、みな500km/lの燃費の25ドルの車に乗っていたであろう」

　これに対し、GMはwindowsを揶揄したプレスリリースを発表しました。2000年頃のミームとなりました。ミームとなったときのタイトルは「もしもMicrosoftが車を作ったら(if microsoft built cars)」ですが、折角なので、原文にあたってみましょう。

"If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:"

「GMがマイクロソフトのような技術を開発していたら、みな以下のような特徴のある車に乗っていたであろう」

1. For no reason at all, your car would crash twice a day.

1. 特に理由はなくとも、一日に２回は事故る。

2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.

2. 道路の白線が引き直されるたびに新しい車を買わなければならない。

3. Occasionally, executing a manoeuver such as a left-turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, and you would have to reinstall the engine.

3. たまに、左折のような操作を行うと、車がシャットダウンし再起動できなくなり、エンジンの再インストールが必要になる。

4. When your car died on the freeway for no reason, you would just accept this, restart and drive on.

11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of road maps from Rand-McNally (a subsidiary of GM), even though they neither need them nor want them. Trying to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50 per cent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
